Exercise keeps the body and mind healthy. But here is another incentive for older Americans to work out; on average, active people not only live longer but they also tend to stay independent longer.
According to a recent study, which looked at 229 women with an average age of 74, women who were most physically active were likely to be living independently 14 years later. That means that they required little or no assistance to perform activities of daily living even when living into their 80s. With so many entertainment choices, today’s seniors can spend countless hours physically inactive, but it has been proven that exercise is probably the single most important thing anyone can do to age well and reduce the need for long term health care. I exercise to stay healthy and to be able to eat things I shouldn’t be eating, but apparently there are endless benefits aside from being able to eat more of the foods I enjoy. Exercise can help keep my weight under control, improved my blood circulation, give me stronger bones, and improve my mood and balance. But it becomes even more essential for older individuals who have to deal with long term care conditions. For example, it can positively affect the health and well-being of someone with Alzheimer's disease by giving the person affected more energy, improving stamina and enhancing his or her mood. Equally important, exercise can help someone with Alzheimer’s retain the motor skills the illness disrupts as well as sustain strength, flexibility and balance. Here is one more reason. It’s well known that healthier individuals heal faster if they become injured. Therefore, exercise can help shorten the recovery period of an injury or illness. And all of this, can be achieve with moderate, regular physical activity. So instead of sleeping late or spending time watching television, get out of the house and play a sport or take a walk. A regular game of golf can improve your mood (greatly if you’re good) and may help extend your life. |
